Happy Phantmas!

It's December, so it must be the Phantoms traditional annual xmas gig at the Grey Horse & the band had learnt an unprecedented 5 new songs especially for the occasion! The evening started with a bang with a fantastic set from the Tipping Point (including ex-Phantom Paul on bass) playing possibly their first & last gig (due to singer Gav recently moving back home to the Valleys). Not ‘Tidy’! They had the throng head-banging from the off to their hard edged indie sound, including a very ‘pleasing’ rendition of Nine Black Alp’s ‘Unsatisfied’, which ex-Phantom Brian would have thoroughly approved of! With recent attendance down it was great to see a huge crowd in da house, who, with a little help from the Phantoms, soon had rivers of condensation running down the walls! New songs in the opening set ‘Vegas Two Times’ & ‘If You Wanna’ going down well. Following Movember our front man had been persuaded to keep his impressive tache for the occasion but things went a bit wrong during the interval as he retired to the gents to finally shave it off. Having forgotten to charge up his man grooming gadget it ran out of power half way through so Mark was forced to return for the second set with only half a moustache! Classic! The band were very soon back in the zone, as were the Phans, with the 100+ strong crowd in exceptionally fine voice as they nearly raised the roof singing along to ‘I Predict a Riot’. Bizarrely, a hotty in the crowd then pushed her way to the front to present Mark with a medal for apparently being ‘amazing’! Her words, not mine! What a stud. He can even pull the birds with comedy facial hair! The Phants then powered through a great upbeat set of sing-a-longs (inc. another new one, Town Called Malice), with the unexpected highlight of the evening being the crowds response to new song ‘Highway To Hell’ (which we had only learnt to shut up a trio of drunk locals at the last visit to the Grey Horse)! Who knew it would have gone down so well! So be warned if you casually ask us to learn something from now on! All night the band had been promising a great big slice of Christmas cheese so as the crowd bayed for more, the Phantoms donned their Santa hats and took to the stage for a phestive filled encore of Shaky’s ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’ followed by Slade’s classic ‘Merry Christmas Everybody’ – IT’S CHRISTMAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSS! Well, nearly! And if that wasn’t enough, you can enjoy yet more phestive phun with the Phantoms at the General Roy Pub, Feltham on Wed 14th Dec! And it's FREE! Happy Phantmas!

The Phantoms were: Mark Gibson (lead vocals & keys), Kevin Rogers (guitar), Jason Biggs (guitar & vocals), Jon Novice (bass & vocals) & Alun Westoll (drums & vocals).
