Jo Doolan
Born in Swansea,
South Wales 1975. Jo moved to London 1995 to study drama
& Theatre Arts at St Mary’s University Twickenham. Here
she became involved in various theatre companies
performing in fringe venues & festivals.
In 1999 Jo went on to train at The Central School Of
Speech & Drama where she gained an MA in Advanced
Theatre Practice. During this time she worked with
experimental and physical theatre companies, performing
in venues on The Southbank, BAC, Riverside Studios & The
Embassy Theatre. "I worked as a performer for a year,
the money was appalling and work was very scarce. I had
started to sing during this time and found myself
becoming disillusioned with acting while singing
inspired and charged me."
Jo became involved with local bands, singing at local
bars and regularly went to open mike session where she
found a love for jazz. She participated in a workshop
with Cleo Laine at the Stables and it was this
experience that encouraged Jo to pursue a career in
Jazz,
"I’ve been very fortunate over the past three years to
have performed with some amazing musicians and I’m
becoming a better singer with each new experience. The
process is very, very exciting."
Today Jo works as
a Speech & Drama tutor and can be seen singing at Jazz
venues in the London area. She is currently
collaborating and recording with Singer/Songwriter Andy
Fleet on his forthcoming album.
In March, Jo won the 2007 ANGELA CARRINGTON AWARDS,
judged by singers and educationalists, Lee Gibson and
Anton Brown, jazz critic and instrumentalist, Dave Gelly
and venue owner and instrumentalist, Steve Rubie.
Jo has been invited by BBC Jazz Award winner for 2007,
Ian Shaw, to show case her work at the Queen Elizabeth
Hall as part of 'Ian Shaw' recommends.
Jo is currently preparing her first album…. watch out
for this rising star!
